Nature

Nature is what we call the ecological system we inhabit. Nature has different meanings for different people and different viewpoints. This understanding is fluid and often contradictory.

  • Many people see humans as part of nature while others dont
  • Some draw a line between natural and synthetic (or man-made) objects
  • Common understandings need to be negotiated and contested by different groups holding different world views
    • Tribals might view the Niyamgiri as a sacred mountain whereas Industrialists see it as a source of cheap bauxite and Conservationists see it as a pristine jungle
  • Industrial societies often see nature as just a resource to be exploited
    • This is a reductionist view
    • No heed is given to other viewpoints and meanings of nature
    • This is one of the problems with Capitalism
