Along with the rise of Modernity, Capitalism and the Industrial Revolution, new ways of working and production of goods were created. Rapid technological growth lead to creation of specialized, large-scale manufacturing units - the Factory System - the organization of which became a matter of rational calculation meant to improve profits.
The factory system involved the workers being systematically organized and controlled - with separation of different processes in production into specialized tasks for different groups of workers. In the 20th century, this lead to more sophisticated production lines and mass production techniques, leading to what came to be known as Fordism.
